A minimum of thirteen people lose their lives and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.
A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine what caused this accident,” stated the country's president.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its duties in public projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition urged an urgent suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This halt was requested until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these vital initiatives.
